AndersonThis is a very significant issue of the CRYPTOLOG. This is the one where we get all members of NCVA involved in the selection of the site three years down the road for a reunion and also to elect members of the Board of Directors. Previously it was taken care of at the current reunion site. This year you will be able to vote for members of the board of directors and one of two recommended reunion sites. There is a published ballot in this copy of CRYPTOLOG (see wrapper, facing page 32) that offers all of the options for this year. You can mail it in, vote via e-mail or vote at the actual reunion in Louisville. All tallies will be made public on the last day of the reunion. Dave Fiehtner is the contact for all matters concerning voting. He and his designated assistants will be doing the final totals at the reunion. There is a spot on the ballot for write-in candidates but each write-in name must have a "willingness to serve" letter and a short biography with it.

The scholarship program is upon us again. We have had excellent participation for that last few of years. Let's keep it going. You will find a copy of the application on our WEB page (www.usncva.org). Please make sure that who ever you are sponsoring has the application in to the Executive Director by the 30th of June 2011. I would like to thank all of those folks who have donated to the scholarship fund this year as well. Some of the donations were spontaneous; others were anonymous and still more were in the name of departed shipmates. We had many donations in memory of NCVA Member Paul Demaskey who passed away this year.

I spoke with Roger Huck, the host for our next reunion in Louisville, a few days ago and he informed me that all was on track for the reunion. All remaining forms (POD and Golf Tournament form) are published in this CRYPTOLOG. All forms will also be listed on our web page at www.usncva.org. As a side note on the banquet this year; if you are wondering what Kentucky Hot Brown is, do a Google search and you will find several recipes. They all sound pretty good. I plan on giving it a try.

You will find a copy of a brand new directory in your mail box sometime in late January or early February 2011. It will be the 2011/2012 edition that is currently in the works. A reminder to all about addresses. If you have changed your address recently and have not informed John Koval, our membership secretary about the change - DO SO NOW. Please "cc" (info) me at on any recent changes as well. Also deleted from the directory and from the latest CRYPTOLOG is the NCVA "800" number. The 800 number is just not cost effective. As an example: Each hang-up cost NCVA $1.32. There are many hang-ups per billing period.

Are we on the move at the Command Display? Yes! That is our story and we are sticking to it. We are still scheduled to move to building 503 at Corry Station. In these years of tight budgets and continuing resolutions it is any ones guess as to when that will actually happen. We are hoping that it will happen in the summer of 2011. In the interim we are still open for business. We are very anxious to get started with the move so that we can display many of the donations that we have received over the last year or so. Not the least of which was a very large donation of memorabilia from former commander of the Naval Security Group, RADM Chester Phillips USN (Ret).

For those of you that are still aware of the actual birth date of the Naval Security Group, you will be interested to know that there will be a birthday celebration of that date on 11 March 2011. The celebration will be in Norfolk, Virginia and it will be sponsored by RADM Ned Deets. USN, Commander of Naval Network Warfare Command. The date is the set for the 76th anniversary of the Naval Security Group. The actual birth date was 11 March 1935. Watch for more announcements on this very important event.

Finally, you have probably wondered why there are so many obituaries in the CRYPTOLOG. A bit of history is in order. There has been a concerted effort by a large group of NCVA members to update the death index for our organization and for CTs and Cryptologic officers in general. Those involved include Joe Glockner, who hosts and outstanding WEB site; Dick Carlson who is the current obituary writer for the NCVA; Bill Moody, a past obituary writer; Jay Browne who maintains a database of names/obits/photos/final resting places; Dean Kahl NCVA Biographer; George Kelly a frequent contributor to the Find-a-Grave website; John Koval the NCVA Membership Secretary; John Gustafson the past NCVA Membership Secretary and Frank Springer, a retired "A" brancher who does genealogical research. This group of individuals has turned up many, many unreported passings of Cryptologic Officers and CTs. It is the intent of CRYPTOLOG/NCVA to update our reporting and do the right thing for all of those who have passed on.
