EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR UPDATE... Spring
2004
Bob Anderson
Hopefully you have seen the new CRYPTOLOG
format that came out with the Winter 2004 edition. I say that
not tongue-in-cheek. The winter CRYPTOLOG went to the post
office in bulk format the last couple of days of January as
planned. That is where the plan slipped a gear. It took
entirely too long to be delivered from the main post office
in Pensacola. The reasons for the delay are being pursued.
Hopefully it will not happen again. Our Editor, Bob Payne,
has a schedule that he is sticking too. Next issue will be at
the end of April.
You all know about the NCVA
History book and how successful that effort was. Work has
started on the second edition. It will be called NCVA History
- II. This is an announcement soliciting input from the
membership. The following will be included as a minimum: Pay
particular attention to item (5) on biographical sketches.
(1) Long Stories (5,000 to 10,000 words) both new and from
NCVA archives. (2) Short Stories that are generally funny
that have been captured from personal submissions and from
e-mail postings on the WEB (permissions will be obtained
prior to publishing). (3) Cartoons. (4) A glossary as in the
original. (5) Biographical sketches. As before, this will be
the largest major section. Consequently, we have already
started gathering Bio sketches and pictures. The section will
be coordinated by, long-time Back Issues Agent, Dick Carlson.
The ground rules are: (a) Bio's can be up to 300 words.
(b) If you were listed in the section in the first book and
want to repeat, please re-submit both bio and pictures. (c)
You may submit to Dick Carlson via E-mail. If you choose this
method please make them in Microsoft Word ®. (d) You may
submit two photographs (normally a young you, and a more
mature you). Scan pictures at a minimum of 300dpi. (e) If
submissions of photographs are in hard copy please place
name, address and phone number on each copy. (This is a good
place for all of those freebee address labels). (f)
Regardless of how you submit your information, make sure that
photographs are included with the biographical sketch.
Photo's submitted alone will not be accepted. (g)
Posthumous submissions will also be accepted. (h) Send all
biographies and pictures to Dick Carlson, 1109 North Main
Street, Winterport, Maine 04496-3418 or e-mail to
NCVA Scholarship nominations are normally
due to the Executive Director by the end of June. Remember
contrary to what the application in the last CRYPTOLOG said,
the scholarship award this year has been increased to $1000.
For specific directions and rules check the application. You may also contact me at
or at my address listed in the Membership Directory.
Due to an increase in NCVA expenses
membership dues will be increased in January 2005. The
increase was authorized at meetings of the Board of Directors
and the General Membership three years ago, to be implemented
when necessary. While the cost of the new format CRYPTOLOG is
higher than before, the primary increase in expense is from
the US Postal Service in the form of mailings of the
CRYPTOLOG, the annual Membership Directory and new member
packages. The increase will be from $15 to $20 annually. The
new membership dues schedule for 2005, including multi-year
memberships, is available for review on the Membership page.
The 2004 directories are in the mail. They
are also available on CD and on the web page. The web page is
updated monthly.
The Ship's Store has changed addresses.
You can place your orders by contacting or mail your orders to NCVA P.O. Box 16009 Pensacola, Florida
32507-6009. Orders may also be made via telephone at (850) 452-6990.
The merchandiser had a change of jobs/states/locations. He is currently
located somewhere on the east coast bound for Tampa, Florida, and
temporary quarters. Ship's store will be maintained at the above
address until further notice. Currently, there is a special on the NCVA
hats that have the duty stations listed on them. They are on sale for
$5.00 each including postage. Call the above number for further
information. There is a ship’s store price list posted on the NCVA
Ship's Store
page (usncva.org). Watch for a new price list in the July
CRYPTOLOG.
Early registrations and reservations for the annual
reunion in Charleston are progressing exceptionally well. The
deal that the hotel offers with the daily fee has proven to
be very attractive with the free breakfast to order each day
in the atrium and the free happy hour each evening in the
lounge. Other amenities are also available in the Embassy
Suites complex. The NCVA web page has the detailed tours
list, along with the Plan-of-the-day and other items. You will find
registration materials and hotel information in this issue of
the CRYPTOLOG and on the 2004 Reunion
web page.
Hope to see you in CHARLESTON !
