NRT-0045 Malicious Code on Cell Phones UP FIVEFOLD in 2006:

Mobile phones are increasingly being infected with viruses as e-mail and internet browsing via these devices becomes more popular. Cell phone infections rose fivefold in 2006, with clients of 83% of mobile operators around the world having been hit, according to a joint study by McAfee and research company Informa that polled 200 global operators. "Mobile operators are already feeling the impact of mobile threats on customer satisfaction and network performance and are increasingly concerned about the potential impact on their brand and the success of new revenue- generating services," McAfee said. McAfee and Finnish F-Secure are said to be the leading security software vendors for the mobile phone industry, but during the last year most large antivirus fims rolled out similar products. The risk to an individual of being hit by a mobile phone virus is still relatively small, the report concluded.
