NRT-0108 Hackers Build Encrypted Instant Messenger Program:

Unidentified hackers have built their own encrypted instant messenger IM program in order to shield themselves from law enforcement organizations trying to intercept their communications, according to a presentation given by the director for financial services at security firm RSA. The application, called CarderIM, was created for use by trusted individuals involved in buying and selling stolen information, such as credit-card numbers or email addresses. The RSA official noted that the existence of CarderIM exemplifies the increased effort that criminal hackers are taking to hide and secure their activities on the internet. The official also stated that the current distribution of CarderIM appeared to be limited, but that it was not really known how widely used the program is. In order to obtain a copy of CarderIM, an individual must be part of a trusted group of hackers, which RSA has infiltrated. The application reportedly uses encrypted servers that are "offshore", probably referring to outside the United States, and does not record IM conversations.
