NRT-0145 BotNet infections tripled in two weeks:

The Shadowserver Foundation, a group dedicated to taking-down botnets, claims that its data shows that the number of computers that are part of centrally controlled botnets has tripled in the past two weeks to nearly 1.2 million infected systems. Just two weeks ago, the group's data indicated that less than 400,000 systems were part of botnets. This latest surge is a significant reversal of the sudden drop in botnet infected systems from nearly 500,000 to under 400,000 that was observed in December 2006 by the group. Between December 2006 and March 2007, the Shadowserver Foundation's weekly tally of botnet-infected computers had never risen over 600,000 systems.

According to separate reporting this week, a Symantec study concluded that in the past six months the worldwide number of bot-infected systems rose about 29% from the previous six months, to more than 6 million computers, while the number of servers controlling them declined by about 25% to around 4,700.

Symantec said the decrease signifies that bot network owners are consolidating to expand their networks, creating a more centralized, efficient structure for launching attacks.
