NRT-0165 Phishing and Cybersquatting:
As if it wasn't enough that we had "DICNAVAB" to deal with, now we need "DICNETAB" or something like that. Brand protection specialist MarkMonitor on 27APR launched a new quarterly report designed to monitor and report the online threats to brandnames, including phishing attacks and cybersquatting incidents. The firm's Brandjacking Index, which uses proprietary technology to monitor the top brands in the world, found that in the first quarter of 2007 cybersquatting was the most common form of brandname abuse, with over 275,000 instances recorded in just over one month. The first index also reported a 104% increase in phishing compared to the first quarter of last year. "There's a whole industry around siphoning off traffic to Pay-Per-Click sites (via cybersquatting)," said MarkMonitor's Charlie Abrahams. "And we knew domain kiting and domain tasting were going on, but didn't realize they were being done in such a professional manner."
