NRT-0213 Business Wireless Networks Vulnerable - II:

London has overtaken New York to become the world's "wireless network capitol." The number of wireless networks, including public hotspots and business systems, grew by 160% in the past year, leaving London girdled by a web of 7,130 wireless access points, according to RSA. Wireless networks in New York grew by just 49% to 6,371 in the past year. The wireless figures reflect the huge number of new businesses in London, according to an RSA Vice-President. The number of business wireless networks in London grew by 180%, while public wireless hotspots increased by 27%. The RSA study found, however, that 19% of wireless networks had no security. Although this is down from 26% a year ago, it remains too high, according to RSA. Of those networks that have some security, about 48% used the outdated WEP technology. The report cited, as an example of the problem, that the hackers who gained access to more than 45 million customer accounts at TJX, did so through the company's WEP-secured wireless network.
