NRT-0263 Spammed Excel Spreadsheets Detected in Stock Scams:
Messaging security firms Commtouch and Tumbleweed Communications Corp. recently issued separate warnings about Microsoft Excel spreadsheets attached to financial scam e-mails. The use of Excel files follows the recent success spammers had achieved using Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF) files to bypass spam detection methods. The Excel documents detected by Tumbleweed were written in English, had financially oriented filenames, and were formatted to look like brochures. One variation involved emails that had attached zipped files that contained Excel spreadsheets, while a second variation simply had direct Excel spreadsheet attachments. Both companies expect spammers to continue using other applications, such as Microsoft PowerPoint or Word, in order to deliver spam.
