NRT-0275 New Technique Reveals Media Player Flaws:
Media players in personal computers have serious vulnerabilities that could allow online criminals to attach malicious code and infect computers without the user's knowledge. As a result, audio and video downloads can be turned into digital weapons that hackers could use to hijack or corrupt computers, reports a researcher at iSEC Partners. Hackers have targeted media players before but this recent investigation infiltrates the machines more deeply and circumvents traditional Internet safeguards by using a new technique called "fuzzing." The new technique works by corrupting the files used n applications in a controlled way to find exploitable bugs to identify weaknesses in various media players. At this point, the researcher has declined to provide the brand names of the exploited media players because he is still disclosing the exploits to the companies so they can issue fixes.
