NRT-0281 Aussie Demonstrates Ease of Capture, Propagation of Protected Information:
In a case that illustrates how quickly surreptitiously collected information can propagate on the internet despite attempts to block it, Australian authorities have arrested a Sydney man who allegedly used a video-capable mobile phone to illegally record The Simpsons Movie, which he then uploaded to the internet. The 21 year old reportedly recorded the film on 26 July, the first day of global screenings, then uploaded the copy to a US global streaming web site hours before its US release. The copy was subsequently viewed or downloaded more than 3,000 times from the US-based web site. The Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT) said piracy investigators found the footage and had it removed within two hours. HOwever, it had already been transferred to other sites and within 72 hours of its posting had been downloaded 110,000 times. AFACT investigators reportedly found that the movie had also been re-edited into an unauthorized French language version, reformatted and distributed on numerous sites.
