NRT-0476 German Legislation Allows Police to Use Viruses in Surveillance Operations:

Germany is moving ahead with a bill to permit police to remotely use virus attacks to extract evidence from a suspect's computer. The legislation is consistent with a Constitutional Court ruling in February 2008 that attached strict conditions to such intrusions, including obtaining a court order and only doing so to protect lives or public utilities. German ministers are to discuss whether to give police new powers to physically plant bugs near computers.

The German police surveillance will use white-hat virus techniques that exploit flaws in computer programs. Police computer experts will try to trick a suspect online into inadvertently installing a virus that sends computerized secrets via the internet to a waiting police team.
