NRT-0485 Most Cautious Firms Fail to Secure Wireless Networks:
Wireless security vendor AirDefense has released new research that suggests even the most
cautious organizations are leaving their networks unprotected, according to an online IT journal.
Tests across 1,000 companies in the San Francisco area - conducted prior to this week's RSA
Security Conference in the city - reportedly exposed widespread failures in wireless protection,
including financial services firms and government organizations. AirDefense discovered that 22%
of the wireless access points it tested were unprotected. A further 30% only used Wired
Equivalent Privacy (WEP) - the weakest form of wireless protection. In government organizations,
72% of access points were unencrypted or are using WEP and in financial services the figure was
67%.
