NRT-0212 Business Wireless Networks Vulnerable - I:
An annual study of business wireless network access points conducted by security firm RSA Security discovered that approximately one in five business wireless networks use no encryption. In addition, only 41-49% of secured business wireless access points are using advanced encryption, rather than the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) standard, which is also considered insecure by most security experts, but was not included within the definition of insecure for this study. Overall, the percentage of wireless business networks that use no encryption fell from between 22% and 26% to between 19% and 24%. However, since the number of wireless networks continues to rise, this led to an increase in the total number, rather than the percentage, of insecure access points. The study was conducted by examining business wireless network access points in the cities of New York, London, and Paris.
