NRT-0481 Hospital Records Compromised:

Authorities have arrested the person alleged to have sold copies of records containing the names, phone numbers, and, in some cases, Social Security numbers, of as many as 40,000 patients from the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, according to an online press report. The person involved in the identity theft - a former worker at the hospital - has been charged with computer fraud, identity document fraud, transmission of stolen property, and sale of stolen property. According to the prosecutors, he made use of his access to the hospital's computer registration system to acquire the information. He told investigators that after being approached in 2006 by someone offering money for the data, he sold one batch of 1,000 records for $750 and another batch for $600 a short time later. The US attorney's office in Manhattan, togeter with the US Postal Inspection Service and the US Secret Service, are working on the case, which investigators believe could be part of a larger criminal scheme.
