NRT-0601 Web security suryey finds cybercrime a major business risk:


A Finjan survey of information technology and security professionals, conducted during July 2008 and released on 11 September 2008, has found that an large number of respondents perceive cybercrime to be a major business risk, and specifically assess that sensitive customer, patient, and employee information could be stolen by spyware. Among the key findings from the survey:

Of the 1,387 respondents, 91 percent perceive cybercrime as a major business risk, including the loss of customers, brand name damage, and lawsuits. 68 percent indicate their corporate intellectual property and sensitive information is at risk of data‑theft. 54 percent worry about their corporate employee information being stolen. 47 percent list theft of their corporate customer information as a major business concern.

Among CIOs and CSOs responding, 73 percent are more concerned about data theft (spyware stealing their business data) than downtime and loss of productivity caused by viruses.

In the banking and financial sector, 95 percent perceive cybercrime as a major business risk to their organization.

Of responding healthcare providers, 73 percent list their patients' medical records as the main potential cybercrime target, with 25 percent reporting that data had been breached and 42 percent saying they could not exclude the possibility of a breach.
