Relive the Comstock Era - A Day in Virginia City

Virginia City once concealed treasures of great wealth that held the attention of the world for half a century pouring over $400,000,000.00 in silver and gold into the economy of our expanding nation. Little has changed in Virginia City since the booming days of 100 years ago. Let your Red Carpet guide reveal how this boomtown came to be the richest settlement between Denver and San Francisco and learn how the grubby prospectors became instant millionaires who built mansions and financed the Civil War.

At the peak of its glory, Virginia City was a boisterous town. There was gold in every hill and millions of dollars were being made. The spirits of these Comstock pioneers still inhabit the places they built, and romance still thrives in this wondrous place in the shadow of Sun Mountain. Throughout the day, your knowledgeable Red Carpet guide will share with you the many stories and legends of Virginia City. You can stroll through the stately mansions, through an underground mine and walk through the many lively saloons. We will head up to High Camp for some of the most incredible views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierras the area affords. Tour of the Thunderbird Lodge

The Thunderbird Lodge and the Whittel Estate grace Lake Tahoe's East Shore. The Thunderbird Lodge has a unique history. San Francisco multi-millionaire George Whittel Jr. built this estate in the 1930s amidst more than 10,000 acres along the Tahoe shoreline. Intended as a summer retreat where he could entertain the likes of Howard Hughes and the Shah of Iran on a grand scale, Whittel's castle, built in the style of a medieval French chateau, eventually became a hideaway for an aging, reclusive man. Whittel was a bit of an eccentric and kept lions, tigers and elephants on the grounds, surrounded the perimeter with searchlights and loudspeakers to warn off trespassers. Among many other intriguing areas of the estate, you will see a dungeon that Whittel built under one of his guesthouses, and a secret tunnel to the boathouse and to the card house. When he died in 1969, much of his fortune went to animal-rights groups.

Tour includes: Private chartered transportation, entrance to the Thunderbird Lodge, private tour, driver and guide gratutities.
