Annapolis MD Waterfront

Annapolis 2024 PinSee why Annapolis has been called one of America's prettiest cities. Discover the historic charm of Anne Arundel County and the Chesapeake Bay region during our 2024 Reunion. Annapolis, Maryland‘s capital city, is situated on the Chesapeake Bay, and its historic district includes 18th-century brick houses and the domed 1700s Maryland State House. On Church Circle, the Romanesque-style St. Anne‘s Episcopal Church has Tiffany glass windows and a historic cemetery. The sprawling waterfront grounds of the United States Naval Academy feature beaux arts architecture, monuments, and a naval history museum. A bustling port town in the 18th century, this National Historic Landmark is world renowned as America‘s Sailing Capital and one of the top waterfront destinations in the United States. This reunion offers something for everyone!

Annapolis History

1649 Initial settlement
1694 Named for Anne of Denmark and Norway, the future Queen of England
1772 Construction began on the Maryland State House, the oldest legislative house in continuous use in the country, topped by the largest wooden dome built without nails in the country, topped with a lantern, and capped by a lightning rod designed by Benjamin Franklin. It was completed and the first legislature meeting was held in 1779.
1774 October 19th – Annapolis Tea Party. The Peggy Stewart and her cargo of 2,320 pounds of tea – “that detestable weed” – was burned.
1783 The Treaty of Paris, ending the war with Great Britain, was signed in the State House. George Washington resigned his commission from the Continental Army — one month later, Annapolis become the Capital City of the U.S. — for one year.
1845 The U.S. Naval Academy was founded in Annapolis.
1860s A Union camp for Confederate PoWs was established and maintained nearby Annapolis.
